Welcome to Ferns – Gateway to Norman Wexford
Known as the ancient capital of Leinster and Gateway to Norman Wexford, Ferns history and heritage make it unique. Evidence of its associations with St. Aidan (598AD), and Diarmuid McMurrough who brought the Norman’s to Ireland in 1169, is still to be seen. Heritage features abound in Ferns, ranging from the smallest cathedral in Europe and Ferns Castle to a holy well. These features sit very comfortably alongside modern architectural gems such as Alder Court, reflecting a community which appreciates its past while embracing the future.
The village of Ferns attracts a wide range of visitors –Minister Brian Hayes visited Ferns Castle to discuss extended opening period of Ferns Castle and was very impressed with what he saw. At the launch of the Ferns Parish Journal 2011, special guest Anne Doyle spoke warmly of her earlier years in Ferns and spent the evening catching up with old friends and visiting the various displays in the local Community Centre.
A visit to Ferns and surrounds provides a lot to see and do, from walks in wooded areas to the more athletic pursuits of motocross, soccer and gaelic games, to the more leisurely activities of tapestry and horsehoes. A vibrant community which has seen much change over the centuries, it is now a modern, vibrant village, growing in reputation as a tourist destination. Wonderful range of beaches within easy reach, from the seaside resort of Courtown to beaches stretching south towards Wexford.
