Don’t miss unique events in Ferns during Heritage Week

First up is t ‘Know Your Graveyard’ on Sat, Aug 16th from 12-1.30pm Event 2: Discover 8 Magic Plant of medieval Ferns on Tues, Apr 19th from 12 – 1pm

Both events take place in the historic old graveyard adjacent to St. Edan’s Cathedral, Ferns. They are part of a Conservation Plan being undertaken by Ferns Community Development Association with funding from The Heritage Council. The aim of the Plan is to conserve, maintain and enhance the natural and built heritage of the graveyard. To do this a survey and plan will be put in place by experts in their fields: Barry Lacey, archaeologist, Caroline Gethings, Built Heritage Specialist and Deborah D’Arcy, Ecologist.

The first event on Saturday, August 16th from 12 to 1.30pm: ‘Know Your Graveyard’ is a talk and tour with project team members on the archaeological, historical, biodiversity and built heritage of the graveyard. Talks will be given by Archaeologist Barry Lacey, Ecologist Deborah D’Arcy and Built Heritage Specialist Caroline Gethings. This will be following by a brief talk on Ferns medieval story by Catherine MacPartlin. The Talk & Walk will be followed by a picnic where members of the public are invited to bring a picnic (and a blanket) which can be enjoyed at a Q&A session after the talk and tour.

The second event on Tuesday, August 19th from 12 – 1pm is ‘Discover 8 Magic Plants of medieval Ferns’ led by ‘Bean Feasta’ Lorraine O’Dwyer. This event is ideal for curious kids and their grown ups who love stories, nature and a little bit of mystery.
